If you’ve got an existing home, retrofitting cables is very expensive – but fortunately, advances in wireless technology means you can now automate too. What? Who? How?If you are considering an integrated home automation system, then be aware that expert advice really is crucial at every step of the process. There are a variety of experts that you may need to employ at different stages of the installation. You'll need to consult a home automation expert (often called a systems integrator) to draw up your initial plans and determine the features that you need in your home. Consultation with architects and builders may also be necessary. You may need to have cabling installed by an electrician with previous experience. The ACA (Australian Communications Authority) sets out guidelines for safe cabling; and the skills an installer must have. Poorly executed cabling can compromise phone lines and alarm systems. If you're setting up a wireless network, it's worth getting in someone who is an expert with that technology to make sure that your home is effectively networked, and that all your devices can communicate with each other. If you have a complex home automation system in place – one that integrates many things – you'll need an expert programmer to set it up and get everything working as necessary.
